Skoura Travel Guide: Palm Grove and Kasbahs East of Ouarzazate

Skoura is a large palm grove about 40 kilometers east of Ouarzazate, scattered with old earthen kasbahs. It has no single dramatic sight, and that is its charm: this is a place to slow down, walk among gardens and sleep in a guesthouse under the palms. This Skoura travel guide explains what to see and why it makes a good first or last stop on the road to the desert.

Skoura at a Glance

  • Best for: kasbah architecture, quiet walks and rural life.
  • How long: one night, or a half-day stop.
  • Best time: March to May and October to November.
  • Good to know: the palm grove is a maze of unsigned tracks; a guide or a bike tour helps.

Kasbah Amridil

The best-known building in Skoura is Kasbah Amridil, a fortified house founded in the 17th century and still owned by the family that built it. Its tall corner towers with geometric decoration are among the most recognizable images of southern Morocco. Part of the building is open as a living museum, with a guide who shows the bread ovens, olive press, stables and rooms, and explains how such a household worked.

Exploring the Palm Grove

Unlike many oases, Skoura’s palm grove is still lived in and farmed. Under the date palms grow olive, almond, fig and pomegranate trees, and beneath them barley, alfalfa and vegetables, all watered by a network of earthen channels. Tracks wind past walled gardens and dozens of other kasbahs in various states of repair.

The best ways to explore are on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. Most guesthouses lend or rent bikes and can arrange a local guide for a couple of hours. Go in the early morning or late afternoon, when farmers are at work and the light filters through the palms.

Around Skoura

  • The Valley of Roses: about an hour east, around Kelaat M’Gouna, at its best during the spring harvest.
  • The Dades Valley: the gorges north of Boumalne Dades.
  • Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou: an easy day out to the west.

Getting There and Where to Stay

Skoura is on the main road east of Ouarzazate, about 45 minutes by car. Buses between Ouarzazate and Tinghir stop in the village center, from where guesthouses can collect you; many are down unpaved tracks that are hard to find alone.

Accommodation is the main reason to stay overnight. Skoura has some of the most attractive guesthouses in the south, from simple family homes to restored kasbahs with gardens and pools, most serving dinner made with produce from the oasis.

Practical Tips

  • Book dinner at your guesthouse; there are few restaurants.
  • Bring cash. The nearest reliable banks are in Ouarzazate.
  • Earthen buildings are fragile. Do not climb on ruined walls.
  • Years of drought have affected the palm grove; you may see dead or dying trees in some areas.
