Ait Ben Haddou is a fortified village of red earth rising up a hillside above a dry riverbed, on the old caravan route between Marrakech and the Sahara. Understanding the Ksar
The buildings are made of rammed earth and mud brick, with decorated corner towers, and must be repaired after every heavy rain. For centuries the village offered merchants a safe stop between the desert and the mountain pass. Today most families live in the modern village on the other side of the river, where there is electricity and road access, and only a handful remain inside the walls.
Its film career began in the 1960s. Scenes from Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator and Game of Thrones, among many others, were shot here.
Visiting the Ksar
From the new village, you cross the riverbed by a footbridge or, when the water is low, on stepping stones. Lanes then climb between the houses, some of which open their doors to visitors for a small fee, past stalls selling carpets and paintings. Keep going to the top of the hill, where the ruins of a communal granary give a wide view over the rooftops, the palm-lined valley and the bare mountains beyond.
The climb is short but steep and uneven, so wear proper shoes. You do not need a guide to find your way, though a local one can add history and point out houses to visit.
Why You Should Stay Overnight
Day trips from Marrakech arrive between late morning and mid-afternoon, when the light is harsh and the lanes are full. Before and after, the ksar is almost empty. At sunset the walls turn deep orange, and at sunrise you may have the hilltop to yourself. Guesthouses in the new village have terraces facing the ksar across the river.
Nearby: The Ounila Valley and Telouet
A minor road follows the Ounila Valley north from Ait Ben Haddou through villages, gardens and red canyon walls to Telouet, where a half-ruined palace of the Glaoui family still has rooms of extraordinary tile and plaster work. The road rejoins the main route near the Tichka pass, making a scenic alternative for part of the drive to or from Marrakech.
How to Get There
- From Ouarzazate: about 30 kilometers, half an hour by taxi or car.
- From Marrakech: three and a half to four hours over the Tizi n’Tichka pass. Buses to Ouarzazate can drop you at the junction, a few kilometers from the village, where taxis wait.
Practical Tips
- There is little shade. Bring water, a hat and sunscreen.
- Carry small change for house visits and for the families who maintain the paths.
- After rain the river can rise quickly; use the bridge.
- The region was affected by the earthquake of September 2023, and repair work may still be visible in places.
