Setti Fatma is the village where the road up the Ourika Valley comes to an end, at about 1,500 meters in the High Atlas. It is known for a series of seven waterfalls in the gorge above it and for restaurants that set their tables beside the river. This Setti Fatma travel guide explains the walk to the falls and how to make the most of a visit.

Setti Fatma at a Glance
- Distance from Marrakech: about 65 kilometers, an hour and a half by road.
- Best for: a short, lively hike and lunch by the water.
- How long: two to three hours in the village; a full day with the drive.
- Best time: spring, when snowmelt fills the falls.
The Walk to the Waterfalls
From the end of the road, you cross the river on a footbridge and follow a path that climbs steeply through a side gorge, past drink stalls and small cafés built among the boulders. It is less a trail than a scramble: you use your hands in places, and the rocks are polished and slippery.
The first waterfall is reached in 30 to 45 minutes. It drops into a small pool with a café terrace beside it, and this is where most visitors stop.
The higher falls require a further climb on steeper, more exposed ground. Reaching several of them and returning by a different path takes two to three hours and should not be attempted without a guide or without proper shoes.

Do You Need a Guide?
Young men from the village will offer to guide you as soon as you arrive. For the first waterfall, a guide is not essential in dry conditions, since you can simply follow other walkers. A guide is useful if you are unsure of your footing, are with children, or want to go higher. Agree on the price and on how far you are going before you start.
Lunch by the River
Along the river below the village, restaurants arrange low tables, cushions and plastic chairs on the banks and on platforms over the water. Tagines simmer in rows over charcoal at the entrance. The setting is the attraction; check the menu and prices first, and confirm what is included.
Beyond the Waterfalls
Setti Fatma is also a starting point for longer treks into the High Atlas, over high passes toward Oukaimeden or Imlil. These are multi-day routes that need a licensed mountain guide. The village holds an important annual religious festival and fair, usually in August, when it is extremely busy.

How to Get There
Setti Fatma is the final stop on the road through the Ourika Valley. From Marrakech, take an organized excursion, a private driver or a shared grand taxi. Parking near the village is limited on busy days, and you may have to walk the last stretch.
When to Go
The falls are fullest from March to May. By late summer they can be reduced to a trickle, though the valley is then a welcome refuge from the heat. Weekends, holidays and all of August are crowded; a weekday morning is far more pleasant.
Safety and Practical Tips
- Wear closed shoes with good grip. Sandals and flip-flops are a common cause of falls.
- The walk is not suitable for people with limited mobility or for very young children.
- Do not go up the gorge during or after heavy rain. Flash floods have caused serious accidents in this valley.
- Carry small change for drinks, tips and the guide.
