Oukaimeden is a high plateau in the Atlas Mountains, about 75 kilometers south of Marrakech, and the site of Morocco’s best-known ski area. Skiing at Oukaimeden
It is best to arrive with the right expectations. This is a small, simple ski area with a chairlift, a few drag lifts and a limited number of runs. Snow cover varies a great deal from year to year, and in poor winters the season can be very short. Grooming, signage and equipment are basic compared with European resorts.
What it offers is the novelty of skiing in Africa, wide views over the Atlas and low prices. Skis, boots and sledges are rented from stalls at the foot of the slopes; check the condition of the equipment before you pay. Weekends bring crowds of families from Marrakech who come to play in the snow, and the atmosphere is festive. Weekdays are quiet.
Outside the Ski Season
From late spring to autumn, the plateau turns into high pasture. Shepherds bring their flocks up from the valleys, and the air stays fresh when Marrakech is baking. Walks range from an easy circuit of the plateau and its small lake to full-day hikes over the passes toward the Ourika and Imlil valleys. When it is running, the chairlift takes sightseers up for the panorama.
Prehistoric Rock Carvings
The flat sandstone slabs around the village carry engravings several thousand years old, showing animals, weapons and human figures. Some lie only a few minutes’ walk from the road. Local guides will show you the main groups for a small fee. Please do not walk on or touch the carvings.
Getting There
The road from Marrakech follows the route to the Ourika Valley, then branches off and climbs in long bends to the plateau. The drive takes one and a half to two hours. There is no regular bus; you come by private car, grand taxi hired for the day or organized excursion. After heavy snowfall the road can be closed or require chains, so check conditions before leaving.
Where to Stay and Eat
A few hotels and a mountain refuge offer beds in the village, and simple restaurants serve tagines and grilled meat. Most visitors come for the day and return to Marrakech in the evening.

- The altitude and the sun are both strong: bring sunscreen, sunglasses and warm clothes, even in spring.
