Tinghir is an oasis town on the southern side of the High Atlas, strung along a wide palm grove. Fifteen kilometers upstream, the Todra River squeezes through one of the most dramatic canyons in Morocco. The Todra Gorge
At its narrowest, the canyon is only a few dozen meters wide, between sheer limestone walls that rise well over a hundred meters. A paved road and a shallow, cold stream share the floor. The most spectacular section is short, a few hundred meters long, and easy to walk.
The sun reaches the bottom only around the middle of the day; in the morning and late afternoon the walls glow orange and red. Beyond the narrows the valley opens out, and the road continues into the mountains toward remote Amazigh villages.
Hiking and Climbing
A well-known loop trail of three to four hours climbs out of the gorge to a pass, crosses a plateau where nomad families sometimes camp, and descends to the palm grove. Take a guide or good directions, water and sturdy shoes. The cliffs also hold hundreds of bolted climbing routes for all levels, and local guides rent equipment.
The Palm Grove
Between Tinghir and the gorge, the valley floor is a dense patchwork of date palms, olive and fruit trees and small irrigated plots. Footpaths follow the water channels from village to village. A walk of an hour or two here, ideally with a local guide who can explain the irrigation system and the crops, is as rewarding as the canyon itself.
In Tinghir Town
The modern town is a lively commercial center. Behind the main street, the old quarters include a former Jewish district of earthen houses, and the ruins of a Glaoui kasbah stand on a rise above the oasis. A viewpoint on the road toward the gorge gives the classic panorama of palms, mud-brick villages and bare mountains.
Getting There and Where to Stay
Tinghir lies on the main road between Ouarzazate and the Tafilalt, about three hours from Ouarzazate and two and a half from Erfoud. The Dades Valley and Boumalne Dades are an hour to the west. Buses stop in town, and shared taxis run up to the gorge.
You can stay in town, among the palms along the gorge road, or in one of the small hotels near the canyon mouth. Staying up the valley lets you see the gorge at dawn and dusk.
Practical Tips
- The gorge is cool and shaded even in warm weather. Bring a layer.
- Heavy rain can cause flash floods. Do not enter the canyon during storms.
- Use the ATMs in Tinghir; there are none in the gorge.
- Agree on the price of a guide before setting off, and choose one recommended by your accommodation.
