Ouirgane is a valley in the foothills of the High Atlas, about 60 kilometers south of Marrakech. At around 1,000 meters, it is greener and cooler than the plain, with red earth, pine and juniper woods, olive groves and a reservoir at its center. This Ouirgane travel guide is for travelers who want a restful day or two in the mountains without committing to a serious trek.

Ouirgane at a Glance
- Best for: easy walks, quiet lodges and a break from Marrakech.
- How long: a day trip, or one to two nights.
- Best time: March to May and September to November.
- Good to know: lower and gentler than Imlil, so it suits families and less experienced walkers.
What to Do
Walk Between the Villages
Footpaths and mule tracks link the hamlets of the valley through orchards, olive groves and woods. Most walks are short, without steep climbs, and can be done with a local guide in two to four hours. Along the way you see red clay houses, communal bread ovens and terraced fields worked by hand.
The Reservoir
The dam on the Nfis River has created a lake that mirrors the surrounding hills. Its shores attract birds, and the viewpoint on the road above is a good place to stop in the late afternoon. Water levels vary greatly from year to year.

The Salt Mines
Near the valley, families still extract salt by a traditional method: salty spring water is channeled into shallow basins and left to evaporate in the sun. A guide can take you there on foot or by mule.
Horse Riding and Mountain Biking
Several lodges arrange rides on horseback through the valley, and the dirt roads are well suited to mountain bikes.
The Market at Asni
The nearby town of Asni holds a large weekly market, traditionally on Saturdays, where people from the mountain villages trade produce and livestock. It is busy, practical and little touched by tourism.
Tinmel Mosque
Further south on the road to the Tizi n’Test pass stands the 12th-century mosque of Tinmel, the cradle of the Almohad dynasty. It was badly damaged in the earthquake of September 2023 and has been under restoration. Ask your accommodation whether the site can be visited before making the trip.

When to Go
Spring is the best season, with wildflowers, blossom and green hills. Autumn brings clear, mild days and the olive harvest from November. Summer is warm but noticeably cooler than Marrakech, and winter is mild during the day with cold nights and occasional rain.
Getting There and Where to Stay
Ouirgane is a little over an hour from Marrakech by the road through Tahanaout and Asni. You can come by private car, by shared grand taxi via Asni or on an organized day trip. The valley is easily combined with Imlil, which lies up a side valley from Asni.
Accommodation is the valley’s strong point: a range of country lodges and guesthouses set in gardens, many with pools and good kitchens. Book meals where you stay, as there are few independent restaurants.
Practical Tips
- Bring cash from Marrakech; there are no ATMs in the valley.
- Pack walking shoes and a warm layer for the evening.
- Dress modestly in the villages and ask before taking photographs of people.
- The valley suffered in the 2023 earthquake. Staying, eating and hiring guides locally supports its recovery.
